If you could offer one piece of advice, what would it be? "My one piece of advice kind of sounds like a cliche, but it's to always turn to God. Growing up, I learned that the hard way, always doing things on my own. No matter what, depend on God and do not depend on people. For girls, a guy and for guys, a girl because that's kind of who we like to turn to, the opposite sex. Even your friends. Just always trust God and depend on him for everything that you need is the best piece of advice I could give."
Toph November 28, 2015; Azusa, CA
What is true love? "To me, I think true love goes back to the ability to choose someone. I relate it to the way that God chose His people to love. I think it's so sweet that we can look at the way that God chose us. We were so ugly in His sight, but when he chose us, we became the most beautiful creation. Relating that back to true love, in the way of humans between man and woman, I think it's amazing that we have the ability to choose someone to love. I don't really believe in soulmates. I believe that we find someone that we want to choose to love and choose to live a life with, through all the bad and all the good. I think that is what defines true love."
Rebecca November 24, 2015; Azusa, CA

Brian November 12, 2015; Azusa, CA

How do you define happiness? "I define happiness by the joy of the Lord. I really believe that He gives me full happiness in the way I go about living. He's really just the foundation of who I am and where I receive a lot of my strength even in times of doubt. That probably sounds so basic APU but really, that's how I see him. His love brings me the best joy."
Zach October 29, 2015; Azusa, CA
What would you do if you never had to work another day in your life? "I would probably build my own house somewhere quite a ways away and start my own personal farm and just be out in the middle of nowhere, probably with a wife. I just kind of want to do that. How do you feel about regrets? "I don't know. I think that they suck. They're an unfortunate necessity of life, aren't they? You can't escape them, but you don't want to have them anyway. I wish I could live life without regrets, but then you ruminate and just sit there and think about all of your life choices and think, 'God I wish I had done that differently.' They're a necessary evil, probably. Final answer: Necessary evil."

What is one question you've always had? "I always wonder why we are attracted to certain people and not others. That's confounding to me because I've had it where I so appreciate someone and I'm not attracted to them. There are certain people who I'm like, 'You are a total loser. Oh, I am so attracted to you.' I find that really annoying and I wonder what that is."
Lizette September 25, 2015; Santa Ana, CA

Mazzis September 7, 2015; Glendalough, Ireland
What's one of the scariest things you've ever done? "I almost died on the first date with my husband. It was a koala sanctuary that he took me to, but then you had to climb an extreme obstacle course and I am terrified of heights. So when you had to get from one thing to another, you had a harness that you'd move with and he was like, 'You need to let go to get to the other side,' and I said, 'I can't.' He kept saying, 'You need to let go!' I told him, 'You don't understand, I actually can't move. I'm frozen.' You had to go on this zip line and you had to hold on and it was so high up! I told myself that I just had to go for it. Halfway going down the zip line, I got really scared, so I put my hand up to stop myself and I almost gave myself whiplash. It was so so scary. Everything was really really high and he said, 'Come on! You can do it!' And I said, 'I'm just dong this to be brave!' I've also done abseiling and I didn't really like it either. It's when you go off the side of a mountain and you're harnessed in and you have to walk down the mountain. That's really scary, too. I'm not good with heights. I can't do them, but I still do them to see if I can get over it, but every time I get to the edge, I cry. But the scariest thing I've had to do is giving birth."

Miles August 12, 2015; Burbank, CA
What changed your life? "There's multiple things that changed my life. If I had to say one... most recently, my teachers. Nick June 29, 2015; Azusa, CA
If you had the choice, would you give it all up for love? "I don't know. Sometimes I like the barrel more than I like to love. A barrel is love, so probably not. No, I can't. The tide comes and goes and so does love. It rises and falls."

When was the last time you tried something new? "I write poetry a lot and the other day I got out of my comfort zone by forcing myself to write because I stopped doing it for a while and I felt out of touch with God. Whenever my poems were good, I felt like they were always relating to my relationship with God and whenever I was struggling with that relationship, I felt like my poems sucked. I just forced myself the other day to get out of my comfort zone and just write and I ended up writing something amazing. I started blogging about it. April is the month of poetry, so I started writing a poem for every day of the month. That was definitely something new and something I hadn't done before. I used to just wait until I was inspired, but this time I forced myself to talk about the things that I was struggling with and the things that were on my mind: my family, my friends, and my relationship with God. It ended up being amazing and something that has opened my eyes to the plans that God has for me now and how to continue to have faith and hope in my relationship with him."

Cori April 9, 2015; Azusa, CA
What's your superpower? "I think it would have to be the ability to fly. I know that's super cliche, but everyone wants to travel, so why not do it for free. That's an ability where you can see the world and interact with anybody, anywhere, at any time. People save up money to go on mission trips to go across the world and help people, but imagine if you could fly! You could do that anyway. The ability to speak any language, any time would also be pretty awesome. First of all, knowledge is power. Second of all, you can have a conversation with anybody, anywhere. So after you're done flying to this obscure island, you'd be able to communicate with anybody, but that's just me being a communications major. Just having the ability to eliminate any kind of communication barrier and being able to speak the language and interact with people could open opportunities for preaching the Gospel and developing relationships and learning more about other cultures. I think there is more to be gained when you're interacting with people. I think once people know that you know their language, they're more willing to engage in conversation with you. If you're genuinely wanting to have a better understanding of their culture, then I think that superpower would be awesome."
Jackie April 4, 2015; Azusa, CA
What do you hope? "I hope to live a life that is actually living, if that makes sense. Like not just going through the motions of what society tell you to do, but actually living life, being present, and creating relationships in which that's happening. I hope that through that, I'll be able to make a change that's impacting and lasting. I just hope to live a life that is fully lived."
Susana March 30, 2015; Las Vegas, NV

What is the truth? "As Christians we want to say that truth is what comes from God, but I feel like that sounds to cheesy and... simple. Truth is being raw and being real. When everything is stripped away, what are you left with? That's truth. When everything outside is broken down, you're left with the truth. What do you believe in? "I was raised in a Christian home and I'm a born-again believer so I believe in Jesus Christ. I believe He died for me. I believe that everyone is created equal. I believe this is a hard question. You're going to hate me after this. I believe family is how you end up. I don't know if that makes any sense. Family forms the basis of who you are as a person. What's your most prized possession? "My most prized possessions are probably my boys, my kids, which aren't really possessions. One's relationship to their children is really an interesting one because in some ways they feel like possessions, just like... You know, I'm an artist, so I've been in and around possessions for a long time in the world of objects and stuff. Kids are really interesting because they are... to be successful in being in relationship with them is letting them be there own people, but as far as a treasure, like a thing that I'm proudest of and is most precious to me, it's probably those guys."

A lot of people here have a heart of gold and their building isn't to the highest level, I guess I could say. Then there are churches in America where there are heaps of electronics and projectors and other great things that a lot of other churches don't have, but they don't have half the heart people over here have. True love and a broken heart or never having loved at all? "I think true love and a broken heart because I feel like when you're in a broken place you find out who you are and also how you love someone else. You find out what you need as a person, but then also how to best serve somebody else. It's like a learning experience. You learn to press forward instead of not learning at all, you know what I mean? So never having the chance to love at all would suck because it's a missed opportunity for growth."

Matthew June 15, 2015; Coloma, CA

I would probably enjoy having dinner also with Brian Brazeal who is another blacksmith, still alive. He's down south. And I have to admit, I've always really like Peter O'Toole. I think he would be a fascinating person to meet. Those would probably be my three off the top of my head."

What happened? "There once was a boy named Jordan and he was a very chubby, young little boy. As he was teased mercilessly for his chubbiness as a child, he started to exercise and he decided that he really didn't life that. One day, he was on the playground and some boys found him and were teasing him. He decided that he was going to pick a fight with them so he said, 'Hey you fools, stop teasing me. It hurts my feeling." They said, 'We don't care about your feelings. That's why we're teasing you.' Jordan went home and cried. (This is turning into a really sad story, but it gets better.) Jordan decided one day to pick up the exercise thing again and then he decided that his body image does not define him and that he could be whatever little boy he wanted to be. He went up to those mean people and he said, "You know what? You're fat because I say you're fat.' As he finished his story in his FA group (Fat Anonymous), everyone clapped because he overcame his image issues. That's what happened."

If I could, if I had the money and time, I would help underwrite three or four more schools there. We have friends who started a boarding school for kids who come from the absolute poorest neighborhoods around Freetown. You could help a child or a few children by adopting, but they're able to help 96 children in their school. It's a better model. If I had the money and time, I would start three or four schools in the Freetown area, free of tuition, free of charge and try to service about 100 students per school as a way of trying to build a national model for a more available public education experience for students."
Spencer October 5, 2015; Azusa, CA

What do you want to explore? "Since I'm a senior at Azusa Pacific University, I think it's interesting to think what is to come next and it's easy to feel like there is a black hole after APU and it kind of just feels like there isn't anything there or who knows what's there after May. I'm excited to explore what real life after APU looks like and how to figure out what that means to take what we've learned here in this community and apply it to the world that we are actually living in outside of the couple blocks that we are in right here."

I lived there for five years and then moved back to Northern California. I had a pretty classic childhood. I liked to play basketball and be outside and do that kind of stuff. I was really involved in the church while I was growing up. I would go to youth group and to summer/winter camp and stuff like that. Then one of my friends wanted to go to Azusa Pacific University, so we toured the school. I actually ended up going here and he stayed home and is going to one of the colleges back home. Azusa has been great. I've been here for three years now and have gotten to take part in a lot of cool activities. I studied abroad, was an Alpha leader, worked at a camp this past summer, so yeah, it's been a great time."

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? "I think, and this might seem kind of unfair, but I would probably change when Abraham disobeyed and had Ishmael. Yeah, I think if I could change anything, that would be it because it could solve a lot of the different conflicts. But then there would be a whole people group that wouldn't exist because of that so... That's a hard question. I guess that would be my answer, though."
Emily August 10, 2015; Dublin, Ireland
What's on your mind? "It's not as simple as you think. In general, what's been on my mind is, 'What are we doing next?' because it's always a surprise and 'What's going on back home?' because my parents don't answer their phones."
Daniel July 29, 2015; Glendora, CA

Are you worthy? "Am I worthy of the afterlife? Of course not! I'm definitely nowhere near perfect and I never will be, but I am blessed to believe in something that has given me a second chance. But am I worthy of it? I don't think so. Luckily, I have a higher power that is giving me a chance. Am I worthy of the opportunities I get everyday? I don't think so either, but I've been blessed with assets and people that have been able to get me to where I am today. I don't think I deserve it. I think I got lucky. To simplify all these things, I would say that I am not worthy."
Elora July 3, 2015; Azusa, CA
Is this all there is? "I don't think so. I mean, if you believe in Jesus, then I think your life is a lot more than face value. Aside from the general heaven and hell, there is more to your afterlife. I think a lot of the time, people are like, 'Life is life and I'm just kind of going to take things as they come and roll with it.' But I think if you live life intentionally with the mentality that there is more, then you'll have a more fulfilling life because you will be intentional and you will make your life about something more. Whether that's being passionate about a cause, a career, family, or a relationship, I think you can choose to make it more."

She raised her three daughters on her own. She started from the bottom and worked her way up. My dad came here when he was seven years old from El Salvador and he's been struggling a lot. Caitlin April 13, 2015; Pasadena, CA
You're on a deserted island, what happens next? "What I'm picturing is like the second movie of Hunger Games. I'd probably walk the perimeter of the island. I wouldn't go into the jungle because everyone knows there's a tribe in there that's going to come and attack. I'd probably do a good amount of praying in the hopes that someone would come and get me. Then I'd panic a little. The first day I would walk the perimeter and see what's what and by the second day I would go into survival mode and start venturing into the forest a little bit, looking for food. I probably wouldn't make a lot of noise and I'd still be afraid that someone's going to shoot poison darts at me. By the third day, if things are still bad, I'd probably start venturing in search of other life forms. At that point, if I couldn't find any food or fresh water, things are getting a little rough. I've had a little experience with indigenous tribes in India, so I would try to make friends with anyone that I find . I guess I might sit in the sand for a little while and contemplate. I would panic for a while, like a day. My ultimate goal would be to make friends with the indigenous tribe and be apart of their family."

What's one of the strangest things you've ever done? "I do a lot of strange things...I'm a strange person. I'll go up to people and try to ask them out for someone and these are complete strangers. I've eaten weird things. I guess what would be really weird in the American culture is that I've eaten a half ready duck. He wasn't ready to be hatched and he was still in the egg. It was really interesting, but I didn't really like it. The idea of the duck being half formed and seeing the whole body made me feel uneasy. I've also eaten chicken butt and chicken liver, neither of which I enjoyed. Actually, the chicken butt was good, but the liver was not okay at all."
